While traditionally associated with establishing design strategies and driving innovation, design leadership is increasingly recognized for its role in advocating for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). As design has the power to shape experiences and influence society, design leaders have the unique opportunity and responsibility to incorporate DEI principles into their teams and design processes. This article explores this key aspect of design leadership and offers strategies for effective implementation.
Design Leadership and the Importance of DEI
In design leadership roles, which range from design directors to chief design officers, leaders are tasked with more than just guiding the creative process. They also play a crucial role in shaping the culture and values of their teams. This includes fostering an environment that values diversity, ensures equity, and cultivates inclusion.

Diversity brings in a mix of perspectives, experiences, and skills that enhance creativity and innovation. Equity ensures fair treatment and access to opportunities for all team members, and inclusion fosters a sense of belonging where everyone feels valued and heard. As Karel Vredenburg, IBM's Global Vice President of UX Research, pointed out, diverse design teams "drive innovation and ultimately deliver better outcomes" (Vredenburg, 2022).
Challenges and Effective Strategies for DEI in Design Leadership
However, incorporating DEI principles in design is not without its challenges. Design leaders may encounter underrepresentation, bias, and lack of accessibility within their teams and the design industry (Design Council, 2021).
To address these challenges, design leaders can adopt the following strategies:
Hiring and Retaining Diverse Talent: Actively seeking talent from a wide range of backgrounds enriches the design process and can lead to solutions that meet the needs of diverse user groups.
Promoting Equity: Design leaders should ensure fair treatment, access, and advancement for all team members, regardless of their background. This includes creating opportunities for underrepresented individuals to grow and excel in their roles.
Cultivating Inclusion: Design leaders can create an environment encouraging dialogue and understanding, where all team members feel valued and heard. This can be achieved through regular team discussions, inclusive design critiques, and fostering a culture of empathy and respect.
Incorporating Inclusive Design Principles: Leaders should consider the full spectrum of human diversity in their design processes. Microsoft's Inclusive Design toolkit is a valuable resource that offers insights into creating more accessible and inclusive products (Microsoft, 2021).
By adopting these strategies, design leaders can navigate the challenges associated with DEI and leverage its benefits.
Advocacy and Leadership
Effective DEI practices in design leadership go beyond internal team management. Leaders should also advocate for DEI at the highest levels of the organization and in their design outcomes. As Julie Zhuo, former VP of Product Design at Facebook, emphasized in her book "The Making of a Manager", design leaders have the opportunity to "navigate an array of personalities, skill sets, and creative processes" and to champion diverse voices in their work (Zhuo, 2019).
Integrating DEI into design leadership is both an ethical imperative and a strategic advantage. By actively promoting diversity, ensuring equity, and cultivating an inclusive environment, design leaders can drive innovation, create more inclusive products and services, and ultimately contribute to a more equitable society.
